Why Spring Is the Perfect Season for Children to Connect with Nature

As the days lengthen and the first hints of green appear in the hedgerows, there’s a subtle shift in energy that I can feel and my little one notices it too. After months of winter, cosy days by the fire, and slow rhythms, suddenly the sun peeks out and the world feels lighter, brighter, full of potential.

Whilst in the Tiddlypeeps meadow recently, I noticed it all around us. Every flower and blade of grass seemed to hum with excitement, even the birds sounded excited! It reminded me of a holiday years ago, when my children and I stayed on a farm in March during lambing season. One child marveled at a ewe giving birth, another found it “gross” — and yet, both experiences were powerful in their own way. These real-life encounters, witnessing the cycle of life firsthand, are experiences that stay with children forever.
Opportunities to learn
Spring offers so many opportunities for observation and learning. Crocuses and daffodils push through the soil, bluebells peek out in the woods, and frogs begin their fascinating life cycle. Children notice things that we adults often overlook: the softness of moss, the patterns on a snail’s shell, the gentle buzz of early insects. Taking the time to stop, look, and ask questions — “What do you see? What can you hear? How does this feel?” encourages mindfulness and presence, which are fundamental skills for childhood learning and wellbeing.
The benefits of engaging with spring are tangible. Longer, lighter days invite families outside; children move more, breathe deeply, and stretch their imaginations in fresh air. They develop resilience, confidence, and an appreciation for the natural world around them. Even simple acts, like walking a different route home to spot lambs in a field or wandering through a local woodland to see the first bluebells, provide these small but transformative learning moments.

How we do it...
At Tiddlypeeps, we nurture these experiences intentionally. Our preschool days, toddler sessions, and rewild play hub sessions are all designed to give children space to explore, discover, and connect with the world around them. Nature isn’t just a backdrop; it’s a living classroom. By encouraging curiosity, observation, and hands-on engagement, we help children grow into confident, thoughtful, and joyful learners.
Spring is a season of potential, of life, and of wonder. By taking children outdoors, letting them experience the changes around them, and inviting them to notice, question, and marvel, we’re not just teaching about the seasons — we’re teaching them how to be present, how to care, and how to celebrate the magic of the world they live in.

So, this spring, take a moment to wander. Notice the lambs. Smell the flowers. Listen to the birds. Ask your child what they see, hear, and feel. And remember: these small moments of connection are some of the richest gifts you can give a child.
